Chandler Center for the Arts
May 19, 2019
Chandler, Arizona
Like fathers, like sons. Devon Allman and Duane Betts are following in Greg and Dickey’s footsteps with their own original music mixed in with Allman Brothers classics. The very enthusiastic, near capacity crowd at the Chandler Center for the Arts were hoping for a throwback evening to the days of ABB and Allman Betts Band did not disappoint.
The band opened with an original “All Night” which fired up the energy of the crowd right off the bat. Duane and Devon are both accomplished guitarists and toss in Johnny Stachela on slide, Berry Oakley Jr. on bass, (Son of original ABB bassist Berry Oakley) John Ginty on the Hammond B3, John Lum on drums and percussionist R.Scott Bryan and you have a talented group of musicians that have been around the block a few times.
The evening included Allman Brother’s classics “Blue Sky” and “Ain’t Wastin’ Time” along with rockin’ Allman Betts Band originals “Melodies Are Memories” and “Down To The River” the title track from their debut album.
Allman Betts Band is on a mission to keep the music of the Allman Brothers band alive and well while introducing their own sound to sold out shows across the country. Thier debut album Down to the River was recorded at the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and was produced by Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell, Margo Price, John Prine, Elvis Presley).
I suggest you keep an eye out for Allman Betts Band when they come to a venue near you. Their music is a familiar combination of “new throwback” to the southern rock sounds of the 1970’s with a classic modern twist. Each of these musicians could headline on their own but together they are a band that should not be missed.
We shot a ton of photos at this show ’cause that’s what we do! You can see them all on our torenka.com website.
